  • What are the four basic parts of a flower?
    Sepal, Stamen, Pistil, and Petal
  • What does germinate mean?
    To start growing
  • What are four of nature's helpers in the process of pollination or reproduction of plants?
    Birds, Butterflies, Bees, Wind
  • What is the purpose of the roots in a plant?
To hold the plant in the soil and to take in water and minerals from the soil
  • What are conifers?
Plants that have their seeds in cones instead of in flowers.
  • What are bulbs?
Packages of nutrients that have a new and tiny plant growing inside them.
  • What is the purpose of a fruit of a plant?
    To protect the seeds
  • Where do conifers produce their seeds?
    Inside of cones
  • Why are stems important to a plant?
They hold the leaves and other parts above the ground, and they carry the water and minerals from the roots to the other parts of the plant.
  • What three main things do plants need to live?
    Water, fertile soil and sunlight
  • Explain the process of photosynthesis.
Chlorophyll in the leaves works with the water, carbon dioxide and sunlight work together - they create sugar and food for the plant, and expel oxygen.
  • What is the purpose of the flower of a plant?
To produce seeds, and then a fruit.
  • What is pollination?
When the pollen and egg in a flower combine to form seeds in a flower.
  • What are evergreens?
Plants that keep their leaves (often needles) all year long.
  • Besides seeds, what are other ways that plants can reproduce? (4 ways)
By spores, as tubers, as bulbs and by cutting (striking)
  • What are some plants that reproduce by bulbs?
    Daffodils, onions, garlic...
  • What are spores?
Cells in some plants (that don't have seeds). The cells help these plants to reproduce.
  • Name two plants that reproduce by spores.
    Mosses and ferns
  • What is chlorophyll?
A substance in the leaves of plants that makes them green. It helps them make their own food.
  • Why are the leaves of many plants green?
    Because they contain chlorophyll.
  • Why are leaves important to plants?
They have chlorophyll which helps the plant make food. They take in the carbon dioxide and sunlight which also help make their food.
  • What is photosynthesis
A process of plants making their own food.
  • Where are two places that a plant can hold its seeds?
    In flowers or in cones
  • What are the three basic parts of a plant - most plants have them.
    Roots, Stem and Leaves
  • How do most plants reproduce?
    By seeds
  • What are some examples of tubers?
    Potatoes, yams
  • Why is it important that plants make oxygen during photosynthesis?
They expel the oxygen into the air, which helps humans, animals and other life breath and grow.
