  • What is corrasion?
Rocks in the river being thrown against the river bed and banks, knocking more pieces off.
  • What happens on the outside bed of a meander? 3 things.
The water is moving faster, so erosion occurs, creating a river cliff.
  • Explain the formation of a levee.
Everytime a river floods, sediment is dropped, the larger material first and the smaller is dropped furthest away. Over time the larger material builds up.
  • What erosional feature is created at the bottom of a waterfall?
    Plunge Pool
  • What happens on the inside bend of the meander? 3 things.
The water is moving slowly, so deposition occurs, creating a river beach.
  • What is traction?
Rocks in the river being rolled along the river bed.
  • Name the 3 courses of a river.
    Upper, middle and lower.
  • What is a confluence?
The exact point a tributary meets a larger river.
  • In what course of a river would you find a levee?
    Lower
  • What is hydraulic action?
The sheer force of the water eroding the side of the river bed and banks
  • What is saltation?
Rocks being bounced along the river bed.
  • What is attrition?
Rocks in the river bashing into each other, becoming more rounded.
  • What features of a river can you see on this map? Name 4.
Waterfall, confluecne, ox-bow lake, tributary, v-shaped valley, meander, floodplain
  • Explain the formation of an ox-bow lake.
Usually during a flood, the neck of the meander breaks through due to continued erosion and leaves the meander cut off.
