  • If the delimiter is used in a question, the question should be surrounded by double quotes: "My, question","My, answer"

What should I AVOID writing in a conclusion?
New ideas or information.
Can I end a paragraph with a quotation?
Not usually - because quotations need to be explained/analysed.
Where should I state the main idea for each paragraph?
In a topic sentence at the start of the paragraph.
Can I use contractions like "can't" or "doesn't" in an essay?
No!
Should I ask questions in an essay?
Rarely. (And not in place of a thesis!)
What name do I use for the author?
Full name the first time - then surname, or 'the author'.
How should I format the book title in my essay?
Italics
Can I use first person point of view in an essay?
Not in a formal essay. (Except in quotations!)
What tense should my essay be in - past or present tense?
Present tense - unless writing about the history of the book.
How many body paragraphs should an essay have?
Two or more (but you need three for your essay!)
Where does an essay thesis statement go?
Anywhere in the introduction, but usually at the end of the introduction.
