What does “those who are persecuted because of righteousness” mean?
Because people are sinful, there will be conflict between Christians and the world. The words is self-serving, while a righteous Christian seeks to serve God.
What does “the peacemakers” mean?
Abandoning the need for justice in our own eyes, and instead surrendering and participating in God’s grace as we seek peace with out enemies.
What does “pure of heart” mean?
The focus of living a holy life devoted to Jesus. Acknowledging that this goal can never be reached without God’s grace and mercy.
What does “the merciful” mean?
Those who show kindness, compassion, and forgiveness of others.
What does “blessed are those who hunger for righteousness mean?
Acting according to God’s divine moral law as if our life depends on it like water and food.
The meek
Displaying a humble attitude that expresses itself in patience when others sin against us. It implies self-restraint.
What does “Blessed are those who mourn” mean?
Grief (sadness) felt over the sin committed against our gracious and merciful God. Our own sin as well as the sin of others.
What does “poor in spirit” mean
We must humble our hearts, understanding our own sinful nature, God’s holy nature, and thus our NEED for a savior.
