Producers get energy from sunlight to create their own food (glucose). Consumers get energy and matter by eating producers.
How do decomposers move energy and matter through an ecosystem?
Decomposers break down dead organisms to get energy, releasing waste matter as they do this. This recycles matter in an ecosystem.
How does matter and energy move from nonliving things to living things in an ecosystem?
Producers use nonliving energy from the sun and matter from air and water to make their own food. Consumers eat producers, so the energy & matter are passed on.
Give an example of a food chain in a pond ecosystem. Make sure to describe how the energy is moving.
