When light is coming from behind a person or thing, casting them in shadows. Can be used to make someone look scary or obscure to them from audience/characters
What is mise en scene?
Everything in the shot. The combination of the set, set dressing, props, characters, lighting etc to make one cohesive image that sends a message to the viewer
What is symbolism?
When an object or idea is a representation of a much bigger idea or concept
Can someone from your team draw a low angle shot on the board and explain the effect of it?
Must draw an image where the camera is below eye level looking up at something. Shows power, influence, control, threats
Can someone from your team draw a high angle shot on the board and explain the effect of it?
Must draw an image where the camera is above eye level looking down at something. Shows weakness, lower status, makes someone look small
What is a birds eye view shot? What is a worms eye view shot?
Birds eye view is looking straight down, a worms eye view is looking straight up
What can a costume tell us about a character? What are we looking for when making that assessment?
We are looking at colour, at fabrics, at style. Are they wearing a uniform or something that signifies their status or job title? Comfort? Style? Practical?
What is setting? How can setting help us analyse a film?
Setting is the location of the movie/specific scenes. It can tell us things about character, mood or plot. Settings can be symolic of themes too
Can you describe a flashback and flashforward? How can this help us understand a character?
A flashback can help the audience to understand their experiences while a flashforward can tell us the consequences of actions/the future
What is a POV shot? Can you draw one from the perspective of a really short person at a concert?
Point of view shot. Shot from the perspective of a specific person or thing. We are looking through their eyes.
What is an establishing shot? Why do directors use them?
To set the scene. To give us context to where the action is happening.
