When two pieces of fabric are sewn together along a line
Seam
Distance between edge of the fabric and the line of stitching
Seam Allowance
Secures the seam. Take a few stitches forward and then a few stitches back at the beginning and end of a seam.
Backstitch
To sewing something together using a hand sewing needle and thread.
Hand stitching
Template of the parts of a sewing project printed on paper. Pieces are pinned onto the fabric before cutting.
Pattern
Pictorial directions on how to pin a pattern on to the fabric
Pattern layout
Tightly woven edge of the fabric which keeps it from unraveling.
Selvage edge
To leave the needle in the fabric, raise the presser foot and turn the fabric at the desired angle, lower the presser foot and continue sewing.
Pivot
To making a seam stronger by stitching over it twice.
Reinforced Seam
Different fabric than the main fabric but looks good together.
Contrasting Fabric
“Printed” or “pretty” side of the fabric.
Right Sides of the Fabric
Using an iron in a set down/pick up/move pattern.
Pressing
The one dial you never, ever, touch!
