A shortened form of a word or phrase.
Abbreviation
Located at or toward the front of the body or body part.
Anterior
A vowel added between two roots or between a root and a suffix to make pronunciation easier.
Combining Vowel
The part farthest from the centre or from the point of attachment.
Distal
The back surface of the body - often used to indicate the position of one structure to another.
Dorsal (see posterior)
The farthest away from the midline of the body.
Lateral
The closest to the midline of the body.
Medial
The back surface of the body - often used to indicate the position of one structure in relation to another.
Posterior ( called dorsal)
A word element placed at the beginning of a word to change the meaning of the word. Prefixes are combined with other word elements.
Prefix
Nearest to the trunk of the body of the point of origin.
Proximal
A word element containing the basic meaning of the word.
Root
A word element placed at the end of the root to change the meaning of the word, but is not used alone.
Suffix
Located at or toward the front of the body or body part.
Ventral (see Anterior)
A part of a word.A term is translated by separating the word into elements.Medical terms are made up of word elements (prefix, root, suffix - based on Greek and Latin languages).
